About the Department
Physical Plant Management (PPM) in the division of Administration and Finance, plays an important role in maintaining the quality of CSUN’s physical environment by keeping the buildings and landscape safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing. PPM employees provide excellent customer service to the campus community in the areas of custodial and grounds, engineering services, asset management, central receiving and campus store, university postal services, and reprographics/quickcopies. PPM performs maintenance work and makes major and minor repairs to campus facilities and remodels, and renovates classrooms and offices at the request of other departments.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Senior Director of Physical Plant Management, the Director of Grounds, Custodial and Events is responsible for the routine maintenance services entailing custodial, landscape, grounds, and events. The incumbent assumes decision making responsibility for the department as delegated by the Senior Director in his absence; is responsible for comprehensive grounds and custodial programs, campus wide event support, inventory maintenance programs, policy and procedure program development for respective areas; acts as liaison and committee member on all commencements, special ceremonies, and student related events interacting with various departments on campus to provide advisement and support; manages a large and diverse organization responsible for a wide variety of landscape architecture, athletic, intramural and green area grass fields and hardscape; organizes and oversees the PPM staff support of large events such as commencements, athletic events and events which serve the public; manages the day to day operations for custodial, landscape and grounds; develops and implements programs and policies related to the area in support of the University; manages and plans programs for accommodation to academic and building project coordination; plans and administers the area of budget, including maintenance of inventories, equipment and supplies, etc.; works closely with the Senior Director and Financial Services director providing pertinent information on budget projects for various cost centers; plans and coordinates the work schedules and shifts working with managers and supervisors to provide facility coverage and support to academic programs; plans and develops general custodial and grounds maintenance during the academic year and formulates schedules accordingly; evaluates equipment needs and supplies for the areas to include development of equipment maintenance program; performs analysis and periodic review of area staffing to assess the need for possible process and/or staff realignment; performs review of organizational aspects of the area; performs administrative duties in relation to managing personnel; acts as the Director on grievance issues; administers recruitment process acting as chair on search committees both departmentally and on campus-wide committees; manages through subordinate staff, payroll processing for area employees; works with Logistical Services on major contracts such as disposal of waste management for entire campus; develops and administers classroom furniture supply and utility support; administers through managers and supervisors an in-depth training program; represents the Senior Director and the department on campus wide committees, board, and facilities based organizations; acts as a member of the department Senior Management Team; and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field. Additional experience may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis. Equivalent to five years of progressively responsible custodial and grounds fields experience in a large diverse organization, University experience preferred; with two of the five years in a managerial role preferred.
CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of custodial, grounds, landscaping management for a large organization; managing and overseeing events as they relate to the facility; possess management-level customer service and stewardship; working with collectively bargained (union) employees and personnel corrective action; and possess management experience in planning, developing, and implementing organizational changes/restructuring. Abilities and specialized skills to: organize various staffing functions for efficiency.
